The Hopi people reside in Pueblos
on three mesas in Northern Arizona.
Hopi Silversmiths are renowned for the overlay style of silver
work. This jewelry is formed by cutting two pieces of silver the
same shape. A design is cut into the top piece. The bottom piece
is textured and oxidized, turning it black. The two pieces are
then soldered together, with the cut out design as the top and
the bottom layer showing through the cut out design.
The silversmith will then either polish the surface to a high
shine or will create a satin finish by polishing with fine steel
wool.
Either way, the Hopi Silver Jewelry is truely a
Work of Art
